Steps to less pain and more energy

Do you sometimes feel sluggish, tired, achy, sore or have low energy? It could be that you are suffering from some basic physical problems. If you sit still for long hours in your car, at your job or at home watching TV, you could be hurting your body over time. Without frequent movement, your muscles waste away, joints become stiff and normal chemical processes in your body change. In fact, your circulation and lymphatic systems slow down causing a backup of toxic wastes, such as cholesterol, that are normally produced and excreted by your body.

Lack of movement and poor posture are the frequent causes of chronic low back pain, headaches, neck pain, shoulder pain and pain in the hips / knees or legs. Slumped posture actually changes the shape of your spine, closes the joints of your shoulders, tightens the tissues around the hips and produces a host of other problems.

The fundamental rule of the human body
Your body was designed to move and without it, body systems start to fail. However, movement can at times be limited if you find yourself having pain, stiffness or general lack of activity. This restriction of movement can lead to other long-term health problems and chronic pain. The key to being healthy is placing a big emphasis on exercising and movement. In order to keep moving, your body needs to be flexible, strong, have good balance and good nutrition.

Physical Therapy focuses on helping your body achieve optimum performance for your body’s critical areas. With years of medical training in analyzing and treating movement, physical therapists are the uniquely qualified specialists that help people move better. With good movement, pain reduces quickly with a return of energy and a better mood.

Easy steps to increase movement, decrease pain and increase your energy:

  • Decide to get up and get moving
  • Get up from your chair every 20 minutes, and walk around, even if just for a few seconds
  • Walk or exercise at least 30 minutes everyday
  • Drink plenty of water

How Your Core Muscle Strength Affects Your Health

Do you ever find yourself slouching in a chair, slumping at the computer or your belly sticking out after standing for awhile? This is a sign of core muscle weakness that can negatively affect your health and create long-term back or neck pain.

What are Your Core Muscles?
Your “core” is the group of muscles that help stabilize your body and give a strong anchor point from which your skeleton can move properly with good posture. The core is made up of your abdominal, low back, pelvic and gluteus muscles. When anyone of these groups is weak, it causes instability and makes it hard to use your body properly. The result is strain to different areas of your body, especially the back and neck muscles. This causes bad posture, fatigue, inflammation, aches and pain.

Can’t I Just Do Sit-ups?
Strengthening the abdominals is just one component of strengthening your core muscles. It takes an expert, trained in the science of human movement to analyze where your pain is coming from and just what core muscles you need to strengthen.

Are you able to do this?

  • Lie on the floor face down and prop-up on your elbows
  • Now lift your torso off the floor so only your toes and elbows are in contact with the floor.
  • How long can you hold this?

30 seconds or less = very weak core muscles
30 seconds to 1 minute = moderate weak core muscles
1 – 2 minutes = normal strength in core muscles
2 minutes or more = good strength in core muscles

Get Stronger and Healthier!
If you found yourself also shaking while down the above test, you probably have poor motor control of the core muscles. With pinpoint easy to do exercises, our physical therapist experts can show you how to strengthen your core muscles safely and effectively to have long lasting results, alleviate pain and get back to the activities you love! 5 Ways to Relieve Neck and Back Pain

If you are suffering with back or neck pain, it can be confusing to determine the right way to relieve your pain and get back to normal activities. For some, permanent injury or changes in their body mean arthritis and the tendency for more aches and pains. However, it doesn’t mean you can’t do something about it and live a pain-free life.

Here are some tips to relieve your back and neck pain:

1. IMPROVE YOUR POSTURE

Make sure to stand up frequently, at least every 30 minutes and vary your positions of work throughout the day. Aim to correct your posture when sitting and standing and make adjustments as needed. Imagine a string from the top of your head gently pulling you towards the sky.

2. AVOID INJURY

Make sure you know the proper way to lift, bend and pick up objects, even if they are not heavy. Use your knees to bend down and stick your bottom out, keeping your back straight. Our experts can show you proper body mechanics with every day tasks.

3. ADEQUATE REST & EXERCISE

Your body needs to heal after every day, so a good night’s sleep is critical, especially those hours before 12am. Record your favorite late night shows so you don’t have to stay up late! Sleep deprivation actually worsens your pain tolerance and saps your strength. In turn, make sure you exercise – at least walk 30 minutes a day to improve your strength, heart health and flexibility.

4. NUTRITION

It is often found with people in pain, that their diet aggravates their pain and their lack of water “dries” out their tissues. It is very important to avoid processed foods and fried foods, which increase inflammation in the body. Of course, eat more vegetables, fruits and lean protein. Don’t forget to keep a glass of water by your desk and refill it during the day so you stay hydrated!

5. GET EXPERT HELP

The best solution for your back or neck pain is to restore proper movement, strength and coordination of the muscles for maximum results. Our physical therapists are the medical experts that can help you improve your function and relieve your pain. You should see your physical therapist at least once a year for a check up to maintain your health.

Suffering with back pain? It could be your thighs…

If you are like one of the 80% of the population who will suffer back pain at some point in your life, you know back pain can be just a real pain. It can interfere with your life, make it difficult to bend and pick up your shoes, make you irritable and affect your ability to participate in social activities with others.

Did you know that poor thigh strength is often a big contributor to back pain? As we get older and along with sitting all the time, our thigh and hip muscles, specifically the quadriceps, gluteus muscles and external hip rotators, get weaker. This affects the support on the spine and makes one action, bending down to pick something up, more strenuous on your back. With the bending down you perform hundreds of times a day, if you don’t have the correct strength in the right places, the stress on your back increases.

Try this…

  • Face a mirror
  • Keep your head looking forward and your spine straight.
  • Squat down, sticking your buttocks out

Are you unable to squat and stick your buttocks out?
Do you feel a lot of pressure or discomfort in your knees?
Does one or both of your knees turn inwards?

If you answered yes to the above, then you probably have issues with your pelvis, hip and thigh strength and mobility. This could be causing your back or even knee pain.

One simple solution is to strengthen the thigh and hip muscles. However, it is important to identify which particular muscles are weak and that is where our expertise comes in. By analyzing the way that you walk, bend and the strength of your smaller hip and thigh muscles, we can pinpoint your trouble areas. Then, we formulate a treatment plan to quickly improve your strength, mobility, muscle coordination and spinal stability.
